Hello, my name is Sandra Gonzales I’m 36 years old and and a single mother of a awesome 17 year old teenage boy whom, I named Christopher. I, was born and raised in a small town located in the center of Dawson county, south of Lubbock Texas, this is were my dreams became afloat, due to the poor circumstances of being the last born child of three and a single mom working two or three jobs to make ends meet. Of course I would steady watched as my peers always had better things than me. I then knew I wanted more and I wanted what they had.
As I grew from a child to teenage years, Unfortunately I started hanging out with the wrong crowd. I got into drinking and drugs and became pregnant at the age of 17. I did not let that stop me from graduating high school, my mother sadly left me in the home alone and so I kept working, paying bills, and going to school while pregnant. My dreams were bigger than everything I was going thru I wasn’t going to let it stop me. I graduated in May 2003 and gave birth in July. Now I had an even better reason to keep going!
After my son turned two and I was still working in the fast food industry making minimum wage of $5.15/hr I remembered my mother struggling the same way in the same work environment so I decided to make a change. With me living in a small town there was little to look at as a career. As I looked in the ads and noticed the hiring section for Correctional Officers and all the great benefits that came with it. I thought why not? went to take the test and graduated in 2005. I made good money, but I still wasn’t satisfied.
Moving forward, I moved to Dallas and went to college for Registered dental Assistant and graduated in 2012. I love this job I worked my way up to $20/hr with benefits and I am still currently doing this. Although I enjoy this field it does come with hard work and constantly being on your feet. Unfortunately, I am getting older and more tired.
I’m willing to continue to work hard, but smart. That is what brings me to this program. I’m ready to work and live more freely at same time. My long term goals is to quit working by the age of 40. I’m 36 now and looking to retire soon.
